Introduction
The news of Carl Dean’s death at 82 has brought renewed attention to his distinctive relationship with country legend Dolly Parton. The beloved star, 79, confirmed her husband’s passing on Monday with a heartfelt statement after nearly six decades of marriage.
Throughout their relationship, Parton deliberately kept her marriage private, with the couple rarely appearing together in public. When questioned about rumors of an “open” marriage, Parton once clarified with her characteristic wit that their relationship was indeed “open” – but only when it came to harmless flirtation.
Despite occasional tabloid speculation linking her to other men, including actor Burt Reynolds, Parton explained that Carl remained unfazed. “Sometimes he goes to the grocery store and sees a magazine with some story about me and he’ll bring it home saying, ‘I see you’re having Burt Reynolds’s baby again,'” she once told The Mirror.
Parton firmly dismissed any suggestion of sexual openness in their relationship. “Yes, it’s an open relationship, but NOT sexually and I would kill him if I thought he was doing that,” she stated emphatically. “He would shoot me too. At the end of the day we love each other madly.”
The couple’s love story began at Nashville’s Wishy-Washy laundromat when Parton was just 18. In her touching Instagram tribute following his death in Nashville, she wrote: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”
Carl is survived by siblings Sandra and Donnie, and will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony.

Lyrics
If you hadn’t been there
Where would I be?
Without your trust
Love and belief
The ups and downs
We’ve always shared
And I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
If you hadn’t been there
Well, who would I be?
You’ve always see the best in me
Your loving arms have cradled me
You held me close, and I believe
I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
Holding my hand
Showing you care
You made me dream
More than I dared
And I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
Oh, you are my rock (mm)
A soft place to land
My wings, my confidence
You understand
Your willingness
Beyond compare
No, I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
Pushing me on
When I was scared
I thank God and you (thank God and you)
Oh, for your loving care
And for giving me love
With more to spare
You made me climb
And top the stairs
I wouldn’t be here
I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
I wouldn’t be here
If you hadn’t been there
