Less than a year after Marty Robbins died, his son Ronny was touring with his father’s band — and admitting that some of those tributes were harder than the audience could know. Marty died on December 8, 1982, at 57, only weeks after entering the Country Music Hall of Fame. By February 1983, Ronny was back on the road with musicians who had worked beside his father. But keeping Marty’s music alive was not simply continuing a show. “I lost a lot more than just Marty Robbins,” Ronny said. “For me, it was not just a professional loss. It was personal.” He also said he never felt cheated, because their family had been fortunate enough to have real quality time together. Fans had lost one of country music’s great singers. Ronny understood that. But as he put it, they could always find somebody else to listen to. He had lost his father. “And that’s a one-time thing.”

Kris Kristofferson spent most of his life doing things his own way. His wife Lisa knew that better than anyone. They were married for more than 40 years. She saw the famous songwriter and actor, but she also saw the stubborn man at home. Once, when someone described Lisa as Kris’s manager, she laughed at the idea. “He’s unmanageable. You can’t manage him.” Then she explained what she meant. Even something as harmless as telling Kris to “have a good day” could get the answer, “Don’t tell me what to do.” It sounds funny, but it also says a lot about him. Kris had walked away from the Army, disappointed his family by choosing songwriting, and spent decades refusing to become the man other people expected him to be. He died at his home in Maui on September 28, 2024. He was 88. After more than four decades beside him, Lisa still described Kris the same way Nashville had always known him. Nobody was going to tell that man how to live.

People once expected Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard to clash. Nearly fifty years later, Kris stood at Merle’s funeral and sang him home. When they first met, Kris was the long-haired songwriter some in Nashville saw as a hippie. Merle was already one of country music’s biggest stars. People expected them to be at odds. Kris remembered it differently. “From the first handshake we were best friends,” he later said. That friendship lasted for decades. They toured together, and less than two months before Merle died, they were still sharing a stage in California. Merle died on April 6, 2016, his 79th birthday. Three days later, at his private funeral, Kris picked up his guitar and sang “Sing Me Back Home.” It was one of Merle’s most personal songs, drawn from his memories of San Quentin and a fellow inmate facing death. Nearly fifty years after that first handshake, the man everyone expected Merle to clash with was there for one of his final goodbyes.

TWELVE YEARS AFTER HANK SNOW LAST REACHED NO. 1, TWO SIMPLE WORDS PUT HIM BACK ON TOP JUST WEEKS BEFORE HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY. By the early 1970s, Hank Snow belonged to an older Nashville. He had already given country music “I’m Moving On” and “I’ve Been Everywhere,” but the big hits had slowed. After 1963, he went more than a decade without another Top Five single. Then came “Hello Love.” There was no reinvention. No attempt to chase the younger sound taking over country radio. Just Hank Snow singing another traditional country song in the voice that had carried him through decades. In 1974, “Hello Love” reached No. 1 — his first chart-topper in twelve years and the seventh and final No. 1 of his career. At 59 years and 11 months, Snow became the oldest singer ever to top Billboard’s country chart at the time. Twelve years had passed. Hank Snow did not need a new identity to return. All he needed was to say, “Hello Love.”
