George Strait and Norma ran away to get married. Nearly 15 years later, they faced the loss no parent should have to endure. George and Norma were high-school sweethearts when they eloped in 1971, long before Nashville knew his name. They built a life through Army years, Texas stages, and the fame that eventually followed George everywhere. Then, on June 25, 1986, their 13-year-old daughter, Jenifer, was killed in a car accident. George was on the road when it happened. About three weeks later, he returned to the stage. That fall, when he won CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, he dedicated the award to Jenifer. For months, George stopped giving interviews. When he finally spoke to the press again, questions about Jenifer’s accident were off-limits. He and Norma later established the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation in their daughter’s memory. The hits kept coming. But George rarely spoke about what happened after the applause stopped — when he went home to Norma, and they had to learn how to live there again.

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON DIED 42 DAYS BEFORE THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NIGHT HE ENTERED THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME. On November 9, 2004, Kris stood inside Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House as one of country music’s highest honors finally carried his name. Willie Nelson introduced him, then sang “For the Good Times.” Faith Hill performed “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” Randy Travis sang “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Then Kris thanked Johnny and June Cash — the two people he said had supported him “back when nobody knew me.” It was a long way from the young songwriter who once struggled to get Nashville to listen. Twenty years later, Kris never reached the anniversary of that night. He died at his Maui home on September 28, 2024, surrounded by family. He was 88. November 9 arrived just 42 days later. Twenty years earlier, Kris had stood in that room listening as his friends sang the songs he had written. This time, the anniversary arrived without him.

Less than a year after Marty Robbins died, his son Ronny was touring with his father’s band — and admitting that some of those tributes were harder than the audience could know. Marty died on December 8, 1982, at 57, only weeks after entering the Country Music Hall of Fame. By February 1983, Ronny was back on the road with musicians who had worked beside his father. But keeping Marty’s music alive was not simply continuing a show. “I lost a lot more than just Marty Robbins,” Ronny said. “For me, it was not just a professional loss. It was personal.” He also said he never felt cheated, because their family had been fortunate enough to have real quality time together. Fans had lost one of country music’s great singers. Ronny understood that. But as he put it, they could always find somebody else to listen to. He had lost his father. “And that’s a one-time thing.”

Kris had walked away from the Army, disappointed his family by choosing songwriting, and spent decades refusing to become the man other people expected him to be. He died at his home in Maui on September 28, 2024. He was 88. After more than four decades beside him, Lisa still described Kris the same way Nashville had always known him. Nobody was going to tell that man how to live.
